Frequently asked questions

Starting therapy can come with questions, especially if you've never done it before. Here are some things you may be wondering.

Starting out

Do I need to be “in crisis” to come to therapy?

No. You don't need to be in crisis or experiencing a major problem to come to therapy.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or simply notice that something isn't working the way you'd like it to. Therapy can also be a space for understanding yourself better, even when things aren't necessarily “bad.”

What if my problems feel too small to bring up?

If it's affecting you, it's worth talking about.

There isn't a threshold for what is “serious enough” to bring to therapy. Something that may seem small from the outside can still have a meaningful impact on how you feel or function. You don't need to justify why you're here.

I've never done therapy before - what if I don't know what to say?

That's completely okay.

You don't need to know how therapy works, have the right words, or arrive with a clear idea of what you want to talk about. I'll guide the conversation and we'll start wherever feels most useful.

How it works

How long is each session?

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes.

How often will I need therapy?

Many people begin with weekly sessions, although this depends on your needs, goals and circumstances.

We'll discuss what feels appropriate for you and can adjust the frequency as your needs change.

Are sessions available online?

Yes. I offer online sessions across India and internationally, as well as in-person sessions in South Mumbai.

Privacy & trust

Is therapy confidential?

What you share in therapy is treated as confidential, within the professional and legal limits that apply to psychological practice.

At the beginning of therapy, I'll explain confidentiality and its limits so that you know what to expect.

What if we're not the right fit?

Therapy works best when you feel comfortable with the person you're working with.

If it doesn't feel like the right fit, we can talk about it openly. Sometimes that means adjusting how we're working together; sometimes it may mean discussing whether another therapist or type of support would be more appropriate.

You don't have to stay in therapy simply because you've started.

What to expect from therapy

Do you prescribe medication?

No. I am a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, so I don't prescribe medication.

If medication is something that may be helpful, we can discuss this and, where appropriate, I can recommend consulting a psychiatrist or other medical professional.

Do you give advice, or mostly listen?

Therapy isn't simply about having someone listen, and it's not about being told what to do either.

Depending on what you're working on, sessions may involve reflection, exploring patterns, psycho-education, practical strategies or developing specific skills.

I'll work collaboratively with you rather than telling you what decisions you should make.

Logistics

What's your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a session.

Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged at the full session fee.

Is this an emergency or crisis service?

No. This practice does not provide emergency or crisis support.

If you're experiencing an immediate mental health emergency or are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, please contact your local emergency services or an appropriate crisis service.
